Glee’s Lady Music Week
The up-beat Fox show “Glee” tackles the topic of coming out the closet to loved-ones in this week’s episode. After being “outed” Santana is forced to comfort her family about her sexuality before they find out through political ad against Sue. Finn’s suggestion to make the lesson of the week “Lady Music Week” leads to a fun group rendition of Kathy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” by the girls of New Directions and the Trouble Tones and a swoon-worthy serenade of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” by Finn to Santana.
“I really liked when Santana came out to her grandmother,” Stuart McDonald, fan of the show, explained.
Though it is realistic, watching Santana’s grandmother turn away from her as Santana explains that she is gay makes for a tragic moment. “Glee” isn’t new to the topic of disapproving family members (Quinn’s pregnancy confession to her parents), it’s always hard to watch a character the audience has grown to care about be hurt by her own loved-ones.
Along with Santana’s decision to come out the closet, the episode showed a heart-broken Coach Beiste and finally holds the high school presidency elections as well as the Congressional elections. Overall, this episode shows the vulnerabilities in many of the characters. The episode ends with Santana singing a ballad and expressing thanks to the members of New Direction and the Trouble because she finally understands that she is not alone.
